abstract


This field study examines the play behavior of Bunny, the founder’s Belgian Malinois, in response to passive, ballistic, human-driven, and dynamic moving targets. The purpose of the study was to determine whether a high-drive dog shows measurably different engagement when a toy behaves as an active target rather than a passive object.


Across repeated informal trials, Bunny showed the highest engagement when the target introduced movement variability, delayed capture, and repeatable pursuit opportunities. Passive toys produced the lowest sustained engagement. Traditional fetch produced strong initial engagement but relied heavily on human reset effort. Dynamic chase interactions produced the longest focus duration, highest re-engagement rate, and strongest visible prey-chase behavior.


These findings informed the core product thesis behind Wagger: for certain high-drive dogs, the play value of a toy is not only determined by what the object is, but by how the object behaves.


1. research question


Can a high-drive dog maintain longer and more repeatable engagement with a toy when the toy behaves as a moving target rather than a passive object?


2. subject profile


Bunny is a Belgian Malinois owned by the founder of zoomie labs. She was selected as the initial field subject because her baseline energy, object interest, chase behavior, and rapid habituation to ordinary toys make her a useful stress case for early play-product research.


This study should not be interpreted as representative of all dogs. Bunny is a single high-drive working-line type subject. The findings are most relevant to dogs with similar traits: strong visual tracking, high toy motivation, repeated chase interest, and high tolerance for active play.


3. thesis


The working thesis is as follows:


For high-drive dogs, sustained play engagement increases when the toy behaves less like a static object and more like a dynamic target.


The study defines a dynamic target as an object or play stimulus that changes position, timing, speed, or accessibility during the interaction. The target does not need to be complex, but it must create a continuing problem for the dog to solve.


4. experimental conditions


Bunny was observed across four play conditions.


condition A: passive object

A toy was placed on the ground with no movement introduced by the handler.

Examples: ball on grass, plush toy on floor, chew object at rest.


condition B: ballistic fetch

The handler threw a ball or toy in a predictable arc or path. The object moved once, then stopped.

Examples: tennis ball throw, toy toss, short-distance yard fetch.


condition C: human-driven chase

The handler actively controlled the object and changed its path during the interaction.

Examples: flirt-pole-style movement, dragged toy, evasive hand movement, short directional changes.


condition D: dynamic aerial target concept

The subject was exposed to early movement concepts relevant to Wagger: low-altitude motion, hovering target behavior, delayed capture, and moving-object reset. These observations were used to evaluate whether the dog’s interest increased when the target could remain active after the initial pursuit began.

This condition is not presented as final product validation. It is early behavioral research used to define product requirements.

Because this was an early field study, the measurements were practical rather than clinical. The following variables were tracked or estimated during repeated sessions:

7. findings


finding 1: motion reduced orientation time

Bunny oriented fastest to objects that moved. Passive objects sometimes produced curiosity, but movement produced immediate visual lock-on. In the strongest trials, orientation occurred in less than one second.


This suggests that, for Bunny, movement was not merely an enhancement to play. Movement was the trigger that converted an object into a target.


finding 2: passive toys produced short engagement windows

Passive toys were useful for chewing, possession, or brief inspection, but they did not consistently produce sustained whole-body engagement. Once Bunny inspected the object and understood that it was not changing, interest often dropped quickly.


This supports the distinction between object value and interaction value. The object itself may be appealing, but without motion or challenge, the play session has limited duration.


finding 3: fetch created strong pursuit but high human workload

Ballistic fetch reliably created pursuit. Bunny showed fast orientation, immediate chase behavior, and repeatable interest across multiple throws. However, the system depended almost entirely on the handler. The human had to throw, reset, retrieve if needed, regulate pacing, and maintain novelty through placement or timing.


For the subject, fetch remained useful. For the handler, fetch introduced fatigue and repetition. This is an important product constraint: a high-energy dog toy should not solve the dog’s boredom by transferring all effort to the owner.


finding 4: chase outperformed fetch in sustained attention

The highest engagement occurred when the target continued to behave after the initial pursuit began. Human-driven chase generated longer focus windows because the object could evade, pause, accelerate, and remain unresolved.


This finding is central to the Wagger thesis. A toy that moves once creates a chase event. A toy that can continue moving creates a chase system.


finding 5: capture matters

Bunny’s strongest play loops included both pursuit and resolution. Interactions that allowed eventual contact or possession appeared more satisfying than interactions where the target remained permanently unreachable.


This creates a design tension. A good target should be difficult enough to sustain pursuit, but not so unreachable that the dog experiences only frustration. Wagger is being developed around this tension: stay interesting, remain chaseable, and eventually allow the dog to complete the loop.


finding 6: unpredictability must be bounded

Bunny responded strongly to movement variability, but uncontrolled movement is not the goal. Excessive speed, erratic changes, or unclear target behavior can reduce the quality of the interaction.


The useful design space appears to be controlled unpredictability: motion that feels alive to the dog but remains predictable and bounded enough for the owner, product, and environment.


8. product implications


The Bunny study produced several early product requirements for Wagger.


requirement 1: the toy must behave like a target, not just an aircraft

Flight alone is not the product value. The aircraft has to create a meaningful chase interaction. If it only hovers, it may be technically successful but behaviorally uninteresting.


requirement 2: the product must reduce handler workload

A successful product should allow the dog to experience high-intensity pursuit without requiring the owner to throw continuously, run continuously, or operate a complex drone interface.


requirement 3: the target must be physically real

A purely visual stimulus can trigger pursuit, but it does not satisfy the capture loop. Wagger is being developed as a physical target because the dog should be able to complete the interaction through contact, catch, or retrieval.


requirement 4: the target must be designed for contact from the beginning

A normal drone is not appropriate for this use case. The object must be designed around dog-facing interaction, including guarded propulsion, low-altitude operation, protected battery areas, durability, and staged test validation.


requirement 5: the owner experience must remain simple

The product should not require the owner to think in aircraft terms. The intended experience is closer to starting a play session than piloting a vehicle.


9. limitations


This study has several limitations.


First, the subject count is one. Bunny is not an average dog; she is a high-drive Belgian Malinois. The results are valuable for early product direction but should not be generalized without broader testing.


Second, the data was collected in an early field context rather than a controlled laboratory environment. Environmental variables such as surface, time of day, previous exercise, distraction level, handler behavior, and toy type were not fully isolated.


Third, the Wagger system is still in development. These findings support the product thesis, but they do not validate final safety, durability, usability, or market readiness.


Future testing should include multiple dogs, different breeds, different drive levels, controlled trial durations, video-coded behavior, handler workload scoring, and repeated sessions across multiple environments.


10. conclusion


The Bunny field study supports a simple but important conclusion: for high-drive dogs, play is not only about the toy. It is about the behavior of the toy.


A passive object can be inspected. A thrown object can be chased once. A dynamic target can create an ongoing problem that keeps the dog engaged.

Bunny’s strongest responses occurred when the target moved with variation, invited pursuit, and allowed eventual resolution. That pattern became the foundation for Wagger.


Wagger is zoomie labs’ attempt to turn this behavioral insight into a product: a drone-based flying dog toy designed around low-altitude chase, simple owner control, and the physical reality of dog play.


The experiment is not finished. But the subject has made one thing clear.


The toy is not the object.


The toy is the interaction.
